The President/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women assists government in achieving its mandate to advance the status of women in Newfoundland and Labrador.
As President/CEO, you will be required to lead the efficient functioning of a board representing women throughout this province. You will also work with grassroots women’s organizations, government departments, and agency officials, including the Women’s Policy Office, to recommend solid policies and programs that ensure equitable outcomes for women.
Operating under the Status of Women Advisory Council Act, the board advises the Minister Responsible for the Status of Women and brings forward to government, and the public, issues of importance to women’s equality.
Your unique understanding, knowledge, advocacy and background associated with advancing the social, economic, legal, and cultural issues of women in Newfoundland and Labrador are essential to effectively fulfill the requirements of the position.
As President/CEO, you will lead a professional team in the delivery of the Council’s mandate. Based on a feminist perspective, as well as information and evidence received from a variety of sources, the President/CEO will make strategic recommendations on programs, legislation, policies, and practices to promote equal opportunity for women, and publish reports, studies, and recommendations.
This executive position will require the successful candidate to demonstrate considerable and progressively responsible experience in the areas of management and senior leadership. Knowledge and experience of issues as they effect women, particularly as it relates to women’s equality, is also essential.
Qualifications for this position would normally be acquired through completion of post-secondary education in a relevant discipline such as gender studies, sociology, political science, education or law. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Strategic vision and planning, and the ability to maintain effective relationships with both government officials and community members will also be critical to the role. Professional interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills are essential.
The term of office is three years with the opportunity for reappointment. The office of the Provincial Advisory Council on the Status of Women is located in St. John’s and serves the province as a whole.
